I bet this vintage 1920′s Subway train, running on New York City’s 2/3 line from Sept 3rd through the 25th, is on time more than the G in Brooklyn. Starting as a promotion for the second season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire (ironically shot in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, near the aforementioned G train) the cars will run on Saturdays and Sundays through the month from 12 to 6 pm, stopping at the 96th, 72nd, and Times Square-42nd st stations. Promoters will also be handing out complimentary MetroCards to tease the series’ return.

The MTA sometimes brings out vintage subway cars during holidays, which is where New York Magazine snagged this entertaining and informative video:

According to officials – “Originally operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) system, the train began service back in 1917 and will once again be operational. Customers who have the opportunity to ride the vintage train will be transported back in time to the Prohibition era with authentic details such as rattan seats, ceiling fans and drop sash windows…”

In a perfect world, cars wouldn’t park in bike lanes, pedestrians wouldn’t run across 6 lanes to beat the light, and bicyclists wouldn’t ride against traffic. Unfortunately, we do not live in a time or place such as this, and one New York City filmmaker captures a local intersection to prove a point, and maybe teach us all a lesson. Whether we travel on foot, two wheel or four, we should be more careful.

Le Mans. The infamous race series features a slew of Porsche 911 GT3′s, continuing a phenomenon of luxury sports car competition. Hell, even the pace car is an Audi. Those pace and safety vehicles are supposed to – well help everyone stay safe. That was not the case at Stuttgart this year. As the starting lap was underway, one of these safety cars remained on the course with its lights off as the green flag came down.

What followed? Anarchy. A crash which almost caused Porsche’s entire team a loss early on. And the team is protesting, obviously.

The tail end of the field was still accelerating while those at the front end, witnessing the incident, were braking hard. The mid-field was pushed together over the entire width of the track, leading to a massive collision. Thankfully no one was injured.

After six hours of racing one Porsche claimed victory. A second 911 came in at sixth place, after extensive repairs due to the early crash. Porsche is claiming their entire team are victims of this crash. We don’t know what the company expects to happen, but it sure was an exciting, all be it tragic way to begin a racing series.

Actress and screen legend Elizabeth Taylor lost her long health battle today, passing away in Los Angeles at 79. It is truly a sad day for those around the world, mourning the loss of this iconic star. As tribute, we found a light-spirited video one YouTube – Driving With The Stars, which features the Taylor giving chase to Grace Kelly, Themla and Louise, among others.

We can’t decide if this Nicaraguan bus driver is the bravest person on earth, or the absolute dumbest.

Former NYC Mayor Giuliani thought getting rid of the homeless would clean up New York. But then the rats stepped in. Oh, that’s right, the rats have been there since the beginning of time. Every so often, we like to throw out a little bit of air transport love. When the Air Force boys get behind the throttle of a super fast attach jet, without much of a war to face, they get bored. When they get bored, and when someone has a video camera, you get some low pass fly-by’s that would make Maverick jealous.

We saw the Mike Conway crash over the weekend during Indy 500 – and we can’t believe he got away without a scratch. Ok, without a scratch may be over-reacting …I mean the guy’s gotta have a headache or some shoulder discomfort at least (we actually ended up with a bashed up leg). But the fact that Conway walked away form this wreck alive is a testimate to the safety of Indy CART design. Or maybe Conway’s one lucky fella.

Oh yeah…by the way congrats to Dario Franchitti for taking home Indy’s checkered flag!
