Copyright © 2012 automopedia. Visit the original article at http://www.automopedia.org/2009/06/01/whats-with-your-sponsor-car/.

With the economy in such turmoil many businesses have cut back on expenses – including vehicles used in sponsorship. But there are still a few bizarre company cars portraying their logo on windows and back doors. Others are sponsored by some ironic organizations. Warning, a couple of these could be a little NSFW.

I noticed while sitting in on Sunday’s Yankee’s-Indians game at The Jake (aka Progressive Field, Yanks lost 4-7, go figure) a full size Toyota Tundra pickup next to the “Home Run” section.

I found this oddly ironic (or maybe, as the Alanis Morissette song doesn’t tell you, just sucky) that a foreign automobile is a big sponsor of an American team based in Ohio, where several car manufacturers have been or are in the process of closing down assembly lines. Ford also sponsors the team, but on there is no Ford car on premises showing off – there IS a Progressive Ford Explorer (as in the Insurance Provider) in right field, probably a coincidence.

Aside from poorly placed advertisement in sports complexes there are plenty of funny business names out there – and if they deliver you can get a good laugh during your commute. For Example, you may not think grabbing a hoagie at a place called “Sheetz” is wise, but honestly their sandwiches are the opposite or crappy.

How about a company like Viagra – they not only splash ads all over nudie mags (not that we look at those in our spare time here at Automopedia) but also right on race cars. We hear the handling is a little…stiff…but only for about 4 hours.

Of course we can’t mention the Viagra NASCAR without a nod to BJ’s Wholesale, whose trucks sport a giant “BJ” logo on each side. Maybe we should get these two together.

When it comes to dealing with Sh*t all day you probably build a sick sense of humor. We all have some crap in our everyday lives, but this plumber has you beat. He took the least glamorous part of an unforgiving career and turned it into one funny van ad for the business.

Finally, since I started with a sports-related topic that is how I’ll end it. This advertisement on the back of a NY registered van features a NJ Nets star – guess they were hoping to have that new home court finished a bit sooner.

If only you could really grow a car like a Chia Pet – but that’s exactly what some around the globe have done. Whether for art of for the hell of it, people have turned their rides into rolling pastures. Needless to say we don’t recommend trying this on your uncle’s new BMW – he may get a little peeved.

This Green Covered…Mazda…(maybe?) can be seen around the streets of China and gets 1500 sneezes to the gallon if you’re allergies are acting up. Probably not a great idea covering the front windows.

Montreal Zoo’s promotional Honda Element is more like a rolling mini golf course – but those wacky French Canadians sure love a grassy vehicle, as the lawn-truck (seen below) is also a staple of Rue St. Laurent.

This mulch covered VW Bug was apparently a prank done to one well deserving ball breaker. I hope they made the friend responsible break out their weed whacker.

If you added some comfortable Astroturf seat covers things may not be so bad. Forget that fancy leather cushioning luxury brands like Mercedes and Audi are always bragging about – grass seats are the way to go in 2009!

I mean, I know the Pacific Northwest gets too much rain, but when your car is beginning to get overrun by weeds you may want to call Lawn Doctor. Another grass-covered VW (Passat, it looks like) in Washington State is about the smoothest (feeling) ride you can get out there.

Before Honda decided to take on the hybrid car segment, they went in another direction with the term “Green Cars” and created a completely grass and dandelion Honda Civic. Sales were less than enthusiastic, however…especially during Vermont’s mud season.
