A Brief History of Planking
A Brief History of the internet meme movement known as Planking. There are many forms of non-motorized transit in the world today – bicycling, roller bladding (if it’s 1990) and the old school way of free-style walking. There’s also planking – an internet movement that can be seen everywhere. It’s a multi-national fad sweeping the world wide web.
Suspected to be the brain child of comedian Tom Green back in 1994, Wikipedia describes planking as: “Planking or the lying down game is an activity consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. The hands must touch the sides of the body and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the internet is an integral part of the game.”
Players have been participating via internet photos, usually posted on reddit.com and Tumblr. “The winner” (who is about as successful as someone completing a game of W.O.W.) must find the most unusual and original location in which to play.
Many have attempted odd or difficult locations, including the tops of poles, roofs and vehicles. Other “plankers” plank only the upper body, while leaving the back suspended.
Planking rose to fame in 2008, both in Britain and Australia. The craze quickly traveled to the United States, where by 2011, Twitter and Facebook feeds were overflowing with Planking tagged pics. Rest assured, this is one web fad we are already insanely sick of.
