Fuel Plane Turns Into Fireball
A military plane carrying 150,000 pounds of jet fuel crashed, exploded, and remained on fire for hours yesterday. Somehow, all three of the flight crew managed to escape with only minor injuries.
The large plane burst into flames as it slid across the ground, pouring black smoke from its landing strip at Point Mugu Naval Air Station, 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
The plane is a Boeing 707, considered an older model, commonly used for transport duties such as this. According to reports, the craft “crashed and slid off a runway just before 5:30 p.m. Skid marks indicate the plane slid off the runway as it attempted to take off.”
Several firefighting agencies and a helicopter to dump loads of water on the tanker were used to finally extinguish the blaze. Firefighters on the ground let fuel burn away as they continually doused the area around the plane.
